Ben Roth, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, AIF®, CRPC®

Financial Advisor

Ben was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with two degrees: a BBA in business administration (1991) with an emphasis in finance and a BBA in economics (1992). Ben began his career in the financial services industry in 1992 as a financial planner with IDS Financial Services (now known as Ameriprise Financial).

After spending three years in Oregon with IDS, Ben moved back to Fairbanks so that he could be closer to his family. In early 2004, Ben formed SBS Retirement Consultants, LLC, with Shannon Staiger and Shawn Wiegand, in order to provide a truly independent and comprehensive approach to financial planning. Ben believes that to provide superior client service and guidance, an investment professional should be free from the influences present at many of the traditional Wall Street firms. Ben is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and currently holds the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®), Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®), Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM (CRPC®), and the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designations.

Ben is very active in his community as well. He is a trustee with the Greater Fairbanks Hospital Foundation and a board member of the Carol H. Brice Family Center. In his spare time, Ben likes to spend time with his family and friends, travel, and enjoy the outdoors of Alaska by skiing, running, and biking.

He continued with his education and received his MS in finance (MSF) from the University of Denver in March 2000. Shannon holds the Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designations. In addition, he is a member and past president of the Fairbanks Estate Planning Council.

In his spare time, he likes spending time with his children: Zoe, Hailey, and Orin. He also enjoys the outdoors and participating in most sporting activities.

Laura Shaeffer

Operations Manager

Laura started with SBS Retirement Consultants in October 2012 to provide needed office support with the increased responsibilities of our growing practice.  She has since become the Operations Manager.  Originally from Watertown, South Dakota, she graduated from South Dakota State University in 1991 with a BA in English and a minor in Commercial Economics.  Her career has spanned from the retail music industry to commercial insurance, and from Minnesota to Washington state.

Laura relocated to Fairbanks to join her husband, Michael, a college classmate and fellow South Dakotan, who has been teaching English and drama in Alaska since moving to Kotzebue in 1999, and has taught at West Valley High School since 2006. They spend their free time supporting community theater, exploring Alaska, hunting for antiques, and traveling to see friends and family.

Rebecca Bentaas

Office Manager

Rebecca (Becky) joined the SBS Retirement Consultants team in July 2014.  She manages our office, providing support for our expanding practice and is our client event coordinator.  Growing up in Bismarck, North Dakota, she graduated from Moorhead State University in 2000 with a BFA in Sculpture and a minor in Art History.  Before coming to SBS, she had worked 6 years as a call center supervisor for a cable and internet provider in Sioux Falls, SD where she focused on building company culture and team development.

Becky relocated to Fairbanks after several visits to Alaska to see her best friend, our own Laura Shaeffer.  Growing up in the Dakotas, Becky is not afraid of extreme winter weather, and did not want to pass up the opportunity to explore and experience Alaska.  Becky enjoys traveling, antiquing, and entertaining friends and family.

Jordan Hendry
